There’s a great article online by Annie Schoening at Parents.com that talks about easy ways to make your home “green.” The best part about the article is that is shares really easy tips (from other moms) for making your home a little more friendly to the environment.

I have to say that the article not only inspired me, but also reminded me of a conversation my DH and I had about making our home more “eco-friendly” back in June when we began remodeling. We really wanted to take a step back, look at our home, and figure out the various ways in which we could both cut our energy usage (and electric bill, let’s be honest) and live in a more environmentally friendly manor.

At first we thought it would be a huge undertaking (and expensive) but it turned out to be relatively inexpensive and easy. Best of all we felt good doing it.

Some of the things we did included:
Purchasing a refrigerator and dishwasher that were Energy Star rated
Installing energy efficient light bulbs throughout the house
Installing a low flow shower head and faucet for our bathroom
Here is a no brainer… We started recycling!!
Installed a bathroom light switch that is motion activated in our son’s bathroom. It is on a timer and automatically turns off after 1 minute without motion.

We are still working on adding to the list of things we are doing and I’m sure we will steal a few of the tips from the Parents.com article. It’s definitely a work -in-progress that feels well worth the effort.

Are any of you “greening” your homes? Any easy tips or tricks to share? I’d be interested to hear about what’s worked and what hasn’t.
