On Monday we returned home from one of the best vacations we have ever taken. Last week SM’s school was on Fall Break. We took the opportunity to squeeze in one last vacation before winter hits. We thought about it a for a while and finally decided that we would use the time to go camping. Rather then head up to our usual camp ground, I wanted to do something different so we head down to Mammoth Cave National Park, just a couple hours south in Cave City.
Can I just say that we had the most amazing time. We arrived on Friday and with in moments of setting up our tent, a deer approached the boys while they were sitting at the picnic table (photos to follow shortly). They couldn’t believe it. They had never seen a deer so close.
The trip only got better. That afternoon we hiked a 1.2 mile trail and the boys were such troopers. I couldn’t remember the last time we had spent so much time outdoors. The next day we took on a 3-mile hike and then rewarded ourselves with a trip to Dinosaur World! Unlike most roadside theme parks, this one was awesome. All of the dinosaurs (there were tons of them) were life size and in awesome condition. They even allowed the children to participate in a fossil dig – something that was a BIG hit with SM.
On Sunday we ventured over to Mammoth Cave to take the historic tour. About 2-miles long and 2-hours in length, the tour was great. The boys were fascinated with the caves and couldn’t believe that this was “how cavemen lived.” That evening SM got invited by some older boys to play flag football. He had such a great time (he scored a touch down..) that now he can’t wait to be on a real football team.
Overall, our trip to Mammoth Cave National Park was great and I know we will go again. The park had so much to do and our days were filled and our nights came early (probably from all the hiking.).

Camping with the boys is something I look forward to doing when Sam’s a bit older!
My parents took us there as kids, and I remember how much fun we had. (My mom’s from Kentucky.)
We finally took ours camping last spring (here in Arkansas) and they loved it. Can’t wait to take them a bit further from home next time.
