A Big Day at School

SM came home from school on Monday beaming. While he enjoys school and is typically in a great mood when he gets home, on Monday he was particularly excited to tell me about his day.

Rather than the normal, "it was fun, we got to count peanuts,we practiced our A,B,C's, etc." it was "I got to read the pledge on the phone!  I went to the principals office and read the pledge to the school!" I wasn't sure at first what he was talking about, but he could barely contain himself. His little chest was all puffed with pride.

I soon learned that he had been selected, along with two of his classmates, to lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. Apparently each morning a couple of students are selected to go to the front office and recite the Pledge over the intercom system – which works through the phones. To him, it was a BIG deal and I have to say that I was pretty excited for him. I didn't even know he knew the Pledge let alone had the confidence to lead the entire school in saying it.

I've never heard him talk about wanting to lead the Pledge but I can tell you that he was on top of the world over it and just so excited that his teacher would pick him. After saying the pledge the principal gave him a "certificate" In recognition of being named a Good Citizen by classmates and leading the school in the Pledge to the flag and you would have thought she gave him a million dollars.

We of course celebrated, where you celebrate when big things happen – at McDonald's.

What a great night.
