Battling Germs One Room at a Time

Chances are if you have children than you have more than likely received one of Heidi Murkoff’s books. The talented author of titles such as What to Expect When You Are Expecting and What to Expect the First Year has now written What to Expect Guide to a Healthy Home, a book that highlights the many ways in which we can protect ourselves and our children during cold and flu season. The simple guide goes room by room discussing the various places that germs hide and gives simple easy to implement tips for tackling them.

While some of the tips seemed to be no-brainers, i.e. wash hands after using the restroom, don’t share your toothbrush, etc. I found the guide to be really interesting and have to admit that I have become (more than….) a little obsessed with it.

Tips in the book range from fighting germs in the Play room (Do you know you should be periodically washing your children’s toys?I had no clue…..) and the bathroom (Did you know you should always close the lid to the toilet before flushing? Apparently germs fly out when it flushes!!) to tips for safely preparing food in the kitchen (don’t put foods you’ve defrosted back in the freezer) to questions you should be asking your child care provider (how often they have children wash their hands, how often the toys are sanitized, etc).

As the mother of two very healthy, rarely ever sick, little boys I was pretty surprised to find out how much I DIDN’T KNOW. I’d have to say that the guide is really helpful and would be a good read whether your pregnant for the first time or the mother of a couple of toddlers.

  1. It is amazing all of the things we should be doing.
Washing hands is the number one thing to do, and beyond that I think we are a little freaked out.
I think that illness is good to some degree because it builds up natural immunity for later in life for our children.
Our society has created a germ afraid life that has brought us far greater problems than mild illness…. superbugs that are resistant against antibotics.. caused from over use of antibiotics and antibacterial craziness.
So let your kids get some germs.. the flu is far better than superbugs later in life.
