I’m an Aunt

That’s right. Today at work I got the call (OK, text message) that my best friend Erin had given birth to a handsome baby named Ben. Ben was scheduled (literally) to arrive tomorrow, so getting the message that he’d decided to arrive early was a pretty exciting moment.

I immediately went into action. I was charged with picking up Erin’s daughter, “A”,from her grandmother’s and then bringing her to the hospital so that she could meet her new brother. He was so perfect, and I am not just saying that because we are best friends. He really is perfect – his skin is just the prettiest shade of newborn pink, his little face (and head) is perfectly round, he is alert and opening his eyes. I even saw him smile, I swear.

I have been blessed to have Erin as a friend. We met in college and instantly hated each other. It took us being forced to hang out – we had mutual friends who were friends – to find our friendship. Within weeks we were roommates and inseparable. Many years later Erin is still the type of friend you thank the Lord for bringing into you life. We’ve been there through boyfriends and husbands, watched each other’s children grow, been separated by busy work and family schedules but we always come back together.

Seeing her with Ben today, that excitement (and exhaustion….) in her eyes, watching her watch her husband with the baby. It was an amazing experience. I couldn’t be happier for her.
