I think I am in Need of an Intervention

So I have a confession to make. I need help.

I have been eating with reckless abandon for months and it has finally caught up with me.

This is my big ass. It used to be a little ass.

See, I’ve been letting myself go. I won’t tell you my exact weight, but I will tell you that I have gained about 15-20 pounds.
I don’t know how it’s happening. I mean – I know…. it’s going out to eat all the time at work, drinking five cups a coffee a day with cream and sugar, snacking on treats brought in by staff. I mean, it’s a wonder that I haven’t gained more! The problem is that only part of me – the part that sees me naked at night – seems to want to do anything about it. The rest of me doesn’t seem to have the will power.
I need help. I need support. I need friends who will hold me accountable – scold me for cheating on my diet, praise me when I do a good job. I know it’s weak and pathetic, but it’s true.
So please, shoot me an email every once and awhile and ask me how I’m doing. If you see a Tweet about me dining out – DM me reminding me to be good. Finally – tell me your tricks. What do you do to curb your appetites? What is your favorite, yet tasty (this is important) recipe.
I am desperate people.
UPDATE::::I should mention that I just ate and ENTIRE pint of ice cream – without even realizing it. This is the crap I am talking about…

  1. I’m having a similar personal crisis. I love my cocktails and tasty nibbles – and I am always willing to choose sofa surfing over working out. It’s caught up to me and now I need to make some changes. I’m trying to convince myself I need to trade the happy hours and delicious bites out for walks around downtown at lunch or after work.

I’m happy to walk a few blocks with you if you’re up for it!

  2. I agree with Shannon. Water helps curb the appetite.

Also, write down everything you eat. You don’t have to count points, but write it down with the amounts. Do this for a week and add up the calories. You’ll be amazed. Next week, strive to eat less.

I have ten pounds to lose, which I am blaming on the hot summer and not walking my kids to and from school.

    And, it’s a good ass.

  3. My tricks are writing down every single item I put in my mouth. I have been doing this for ten years and I have maintain my weight in the 120s and I am on my way back after my second kid.

Also, when the munchies hit I take at least ten deep breaths before eating what I want and I can usually choose an healthier option or drink water.

Brushing teeth helps squash bad eating habits.

And exercise, be it walking, toning whatevah…just move the old body.

  4. I lost 10 lb. last year. The things that helped me:
-cut down on the coffee-2 cups instead of 5 will take you down A LOT of calories. (I didn’t cut it completely out and even still pollute it but I was having 5 cups too.)
-cut out soda-yes, even diet. use it as a treat, not an all the time drink. (I maybe have 1 a month now.)
-add salads to your dinner routine. (We’re up to 2 a week-add chicken, steak, shrimp, extra veg/fruit to change up the flavors.)
-quit buying high fat/high calorie snacks. The family will adjust.

Start with one or two things a week-it takes a while to get used to. Also exercise in any way shape or form that you can. Stairs-yes. Farther in the parking lot? Yes. Once around the block after dinner-even with the little ones in tow will count as getting your butt moving.

This said? I need to up my walking/exercise because I’ve ‘found’ a few pounds this summer, myself. Beginning on Monday I will be walking my kids to school 4 days a week, then continuing on for about an hour. We’ll keep each other in check, ok?

  5. I should put you in touch with my mom. She’s always hassling me about my weight. It stresses me out so much that I end up eating MORE…

    It’s not pretty!

Be strong, girl. I think it’s all in little changes and the same stuff we hear all the time :-)

  6. It doesn’t seem fair that it’s so much more fun to PUT ON the weight than to take it off.

I know what you mean about the person in the mirror being motivated, but in the cold light of day… eh?

I’ve been there and lost 30 lbs and then gained 10 back and lost the 10 again and then put it yo-yo style…

I feel like I’m constantly dieting and it’s no fun!

I’m there with ya Shannan… And we eat very healthy here (my DH is a machine) and we don’t eat out.

Sigh… I’ll go put the peanut butter down now…

  7. This is great advice you guys. I am going to have to do another post where I share it witht he world.

I can’t tell you how frustrating it is. These seem like some easy soloutions and first steps.

  8. So, Shannan, you want to go out to lunch today?

    Kidding!

Lunch walk post eating our healthies instead?

    :)

  9. lol. Oh, Laura. Aren’t we the funny one….Yes. We should get with Kate and walk – even just 20 minutes would be beneficial.

  10. Let’s get together and walk or something?

I’m in it with you – with a bit more weight to lose.

I have lost almost 25 lbs so far – it’s taken since January, but slow and steady, right?

  11. I’ve never dieted, but I have managed to lose weight. Here’s what worked:

Hitting the gym and walking (duh)
    Snacking on fruit
Having frozen fruit and tiny pieces of good chocolate for dessert
Using smaller plates and bowls and not having seconds
Learning to like coffee without sugar (I still use milk)
Packing my lunch at work–I don’t choose low-cal foods because then I’ll be hungry and defeat myself with a cupcake. Instead, pack leftovers or a basic sandwich. It’ll still have way fewer calories than anything a restaurant serves.

  12. Alma -
Smaller plates – That is genious. That way I don’t feel as overwhelmed or like I have to eat everything.

  13. Ok I’m new to your place and I must say WHAT are you CRAZY your ass isn’t big at all… I’m not gay or anything (and there’s nothing wrong with being gay) but you have a cute little ass… But if you think so then hey who am I to judge good luck with the whole making your ass smaller.. I will drop back to see how you are making out.

  14. Personally, I think your ass is just fine. Nice and round, but not in a chunky way.

I feel your pain though. I’ve gained 20 lbs in 2 years. Not cool. I lose 5 or 10 lbs, but gain in back when I slack. I just love ice cream and wine too much and hate exercise even more.

  15. Tina & DA -
You girls are too much… Thanks for your words of encouragement. I think I can really do it this time!

  16. i do not think you have a big butt. for real.
however, i understand if you aren’t happy with yourself. It is hard to get motivated and stay motivated.
I think that if you commit yourself to 3 to 4 days a week for exercise, then you won’t overwhelm yourself, and once you start seeing results, it will keep you motivated to eat right and exercise. Plus, you have to have one cheat meal a week.

  17. Just4ofus,
I love, love, love the idea that I can have a cheat meal. That gives me something to look forward to, for sure!

  18. First, that is not a big butt. Seriously. I don’t want to dismiss your concerns, but I wish someone had said to me “your butt is not big” back when I was 140.

I’ve started a new routine, for me the trick is routine… start small and build on it!

    : )
