Gaining Independence and Growing Up

This weekend while camping SM passed a major milestone – He learned how to ride his bike without training wheels!!

The motivation to loose the training wheels started Saturday morning. SM was riding his bike along the drive in front of our campsite while I was making breakfast. After a few minutes SM rode up with tears in his eyes. Apparently a girl – probably 9 or 10 – a few sites down had said something about him having training wheels on his bike when he rode by. It made him feel embarrassed (he is pretty sensitive). It was then and there – for the first time – that SM told me he thought it would be a good idea to try to ride without them.

I talked to The Husband about the situation and he took over. Within just a few minutes the training wheels were off and they were working up a sweat practicing.

Last night when we got home, SM made the leap and rode on his own. Check it out!

Nothing compares with the simple pleasure of a bike ride.

  1. I’ve got tears in my eyes! I was just thinking about this over the weekend. My brother actually taught me, while making me wear his football helmet and shoulder pads! I’m going to be a wreck when we get to that stage, though.

  2. That is so wonderful! I’ll never forget the amazing freedom my bike gave me when I was a little girl. I remember my dad teaching me how to go sans training wheels… Riding around in the front lawn so I wouldn’t get hurt if I fell.

That’s fantastic!!! Great story – it brings back my own memories. Thanks for that ;)

  3. Thanks. He’s been so scared to try it without the training wheels. Part of my is glad that little girl said something.

  4. Yay! We’ll be doing this soon. Boy 1 has worked on it and Boy 2 will be getting a bike for his birthday.

  5. Congrats! A very liberating experience for him I’m sure. That’s one of the big milestones that everyone can relate to.

  6. That's AWESOME! I'm terrified of that moment, but figure we have a few more years before I have to REALLY worry about it.

(And I was totally wondering who that was in your video until I watched it and saw it was just a wonky image. And then your comment about it made me laugh. I'm glad it's not just me & my wine!)

    :0)

  7. I am so proud of sean! the whole time i watched the video i held my breath then cheered! wtg mr big boy!

  8. Congratulations! What a big milestone. Say it with me now, Aaawwwwwww! :o )

    Blessings, Whitney

  9. Yea!!!

He needs to talk to Josh… Josh was riding a bike without training wheels all last summer and all this summer. Now, he can’t do it.

Apparently he is the exception that proves the rule… yes, you can forget to ride a bike.
