I love it when mishaps turn out to be blessings in disguise. What a great picture. They look so sweet!

we've had a long standing rule, which I carry over from my growing up: no money at all spent on costumes, unless the kid has money and wants to spend their own. (which they have done) The costume comes from stuff around the house. Period.

Most years, I must admit, I was a hobo (dad's old shirt and pair of pants, some dirt on my face, a stick and a bandana...voila!) but we managed to do clowns, witches, gypsies, my brother was a girl one year (wearing my dress) and I was a football player (borrowed a pee wee football uni from across the street)

My oldest was a punk rocker when he was 8, and his little sister, about 9 months old, was The Baby That Ate Manhattan (she had a Ken doll or something and was chewing on it while we trick or treated. :) She was a fairy one year, with wings made of an old sheet and wire hangers and an old sparkly skirt. Two years ago, I was a tourist...I did fork over $1.00 for a straw hat...

Now and again, we've bought accessories, such as make up or opera gloves but overall, raising four kids, I've spent less than $100 on halloween costumes, and we've always had a BLAST creating our own!

Ugh. And that is exactly the reason why I won't order my costumes online. I had that happen with Christmas presents and it wasn't fun at all. So glad Halloween was saved. :-)
