Decisions, Decisions

So the time has come for me to consider getting a new phone. My current phone, the TREO755 is struggling to keep up with my social media needs. Aside from the fact that there is no good mobile Twitter application, for awhile now the mic has been acting up – causing calls to sound fuzzy and I’ve been putting up with it because it was satisfying my social media cravings.

Everything was going along just fine until Christmas break when it failed me twice. The first time was when my friend 5chw4r7z twittered about a new mobile video application – Qik. The application allows you to take video with your mobile phone and in essence, tweet it.  Being a professional stalker (er, um doting mother) of my children, I wanted it.  I logged on to Qik’s site, registered and BAM – The TREO is not yet supported. FAIL.

The second instance occured when I was logged into Pandora. Listening to my Bing Crosby inspired music list, I noticed that Pandora had a mobile application. SWEET. I could take it with me? I could play it in the car?  How great is that.  I click through the prompts and BAM – The TREO is not supported. FAIL.

It’s just so depressing. The TREO is a great phone but nobody seems to create applications for it.

So now I need your help.  I need to know which phone I should go with, the Blackberry or the iPhone. A contract is not an issue as I don’t have one on my current phone so I can go with any provider.

I put together this quick poll and would also love your thoughts in the comment section as to which one you’d pick. I’m looking for a phone that can support my new media habit as well as my phone needs.

  1. Hubby has had a Blackberry for one year. I got an iPhone 2 weeks ago. NO CONTEST!! iPhone wins! Hubby wants to switch now, and I’ll never go back to regular phone. It’s just like when I made my switch to Mac computer – - I can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner. It’s super-easy to learn and SO incredibly awesome. You’ll love it.

  2. If I had whoever supported the iPhone, that’s what I would get. but since I have tmobile, I’ll be getting a blackberry.

  3. I had a Blackberry Curve (my 3rd BB) until the first weekend of January when it died on me. I got an iPhone to replace it and I think it’s okay. The web browser is awesome and is what kept me from returning it (I was on the fence for a while). It does offer a ton of applications, including some I use to distract my son. But compared to the Blackberry, I find the iPhone to be a little slow in switching applications and accessing info (so, comparatively, it takes a lot longer to exit an app, locate a contact, and place a call, for example). You can’t search your email. You can’t cut and paste. The camera has no flash. Email navigation is better on the Blackberry. Blackberry has better Google Apps, such as a wireless calendar sync and standalone gtalk client. There are ways around these on the iPhone, but they aren’t as good as actual Google apps.

But the web browser is really awesome, so despite all that, I kept my iPhone.

I hope this critical view from a BB to iPhone user helps!

  5. Go for the iPhone!!!!

I had the same decision to make right after Christmas. I went to the AT&T store and played with their demo iPhone & BB and liked the iPhone more. I purchased it and hhave had no problems. I LOVE my iPhone and will never go back to just a “regular” phone. LOL

  6. I don’t have either, but I have the iPod Touch, which is basically the iPhone without the phone and camera. I have to say, I love it. Love that I can Twitter from it and Facebook and read my email and the paper and YouTube and all that other crap that sucks up my time during the day. I don’t have the iPhone because I am not a fan of AT&T. I happen to love my Verizon Service and it will take more than Satan to take my network from me.

Go and hold both phones. Feel them and love them and call them your own…then decide.

  7. I just switched from iPhone to Blackberry Storm, and I really really miss the iPhone. Blackberry emphasizes email and schedule. iPhone does everything else better. I don’t use flash photography anyway.

  8. I don’t have either, but I voted anyway ;-)

I would love to have an iPhone, but I am in the middle of my contract with AT&T and to upgrade would cost me a lot of penalties.

I also consider this a bit of a blessing, since I border on being too connected (is that possible). Having a little break from my computer each day is a good thing, and if I was able to take it with me, I am not sure how well my interpersonal skills would hold up!

Good luck with your choice :-)

  9. i think it depend son whether you like a touch screen or a keyboard.
my friend Melissa who is a HUGE techno geek.. hated the iphone and returned it.
I love love love my blackberry, but I haven’t had an Iphone…

  10. funny you mention the Treo mic issue…I just had to replace my Treo b/c people could not hear me more than 50% of the time …fortunately they did it for free bc I was so ready to throw it away! Found out I can’t get a smart phone without the internet option and I’m not there yet…someday. I voted anyway though I am cleary not educated enough to make your decision

  11. Right now, if you want Qik and the iPhone, you’ll have to jail break it, unless you know someone.
Jackie, who is the PR person at Qik has a Blackberry and swears by it, I think her video looks little better the the video off my iPhone.
Its a tossup, both camps are really passionate about their phones.

  12. I’m so glad you posted about this! I’m right now trying to figure out the same thing. My husband has the Blackberry and I like it very much, but there is just something about the iPhone! Of course, I doubt I’m “eligible” for an upgrade, so I may be forced into a blackberry.

  13. Get the iPhone. Hands down the best Smartphone. It’s not really a “Smartphone” – it’s more a small computer in your pocket (or purse)!

I really don’t know what Janice (3rd post) is talking about: “…I find the iPhone to be a little slow in switching applications and accessing info (so, comparatively, it takes a lot longer to exit an app, locate a contact, and place a call, for example)…”

With the new iPhone 3Gs, apps close and switch faster than anything I’ve seen. VERY fast!

“…You can’t search your email…” You CAN search your email. In fact, in the new 3.0 OS on the iPhone, you have GLOBAL search. Fantastic. Searches everywhere for your inquiry. And fast!

“…You can’t cut and paste…” – You CAN cut and paste! And the way Apple implements it is just awesome… Very user friendly.

“…he camera has no flash…” True, but with the way they’ve engineered the auto-focus (and the finger focusing!), auto-contrast, and auto-colorization, the photos come out great anyway.

“…Email navigation is better on the Blackberry…” ?? Email navigation on the iPhone is easy as pie. Don’t understand her problem w/ email nav on the iPhone. I love it.

Browsing is lightening fast. My wife has the iPhone 3G, and I’ve had my 3Gs for about a week and 1/2 now. We did side by side speed tests of a bunch of websites. My 3Gs won hands down on every page. Sooo fast.

I am not an Apple fan-boy. In fact, I’m an IT geek, working in a Windows/Unix world, and I say go for the iPhone. It is just incredible. This is the next big thing. A computer in your pocket – and I have to say it – Apple got it 100% right, and I think they will continue to lead.

Good luck with your choice (get the iPhone!).
