Getting Our “Read” On

My Boys LOVE to read and I feel blessed that they feel this way.  As a child growing up in a super small town in Iowa, reading took me places and exposed me to things that I couldn’t experience living in a rural farm town.

Because reading was such a part of my life, I made it a goal when I had children that I would read to them and encourage them to read every day.  I also swore I would make reading fun (because it is!) In addition to reading, we also try to get to the library at least once a week to pick up new books. Our library also offers story times, but we never seem to be able to get our acts together to make it to them…..

Well my efforts have paid off and today at ages 3 and 6, I find myself with two bookworms who not only love to read/be read too, but that are also fabulous spellers as a result.

With school ending and summer upon us we’ll be checking out the reading program at our local library.  It’s a great way to help kids stay excited about reading (they often offer small prizes for reading x number of books) and to keep their brains working while school’s out.

Most libraries have summer reading programs.

My son is a book lover too! Unfortunately, we never seem to hit the library for story time, but we’ll have to look into some of the reading programs. Thanks for the info!

Great post, Shannan! Local 12 was in library the other day to do a piece on summer reading. Summer is a great time for us to bring in those who are not regular library visitors so we offer summer reading & programs for babies to adults!
