Our New Baby Has Four Legs

With the recent passing of my childhood dog, Bear I decided it was time to get the boys a puppy.

I am pleased to introduce Roxie Bluebell Boyer. Roxie is a 9wk old dachshund/ Pomeranian mix that we found on Craig’s List.

While she is absolutely adorable, I forgot how much work puppies are. It’s almost like having a new baby. Since bringing her home Thursday Ive been frantically researching potty training and behavior techniques. While I know I won’t happen over night (she is a puppy after all) I am excited to say that I am starting to see signs of hope (and fewer potty accidents) already. (Stay tuned for a future post with tips for potty training – I am learning a lot)

Here are a couple of pictures of our new baby. The boys are madly in love with her.

iPhone Applications That Keep You Organized

If you read my main blog, Mommy Bits, you know that I have a slight obsession with my iPhone. Since getting it for Valentine’s Day from my amazing hubby, there’s not been a day that I haven’t used it to help me solve an issue, find a restaurant, save money (yes it’s true) or entertain my children.

One of the things I am constantly doing is searching for iPhone apps that will help make my life easier. I recently had the opportunity to test out two iPhone applications from IconApps that helped me do just that. While I don’t normally purchase iPhone apps, I really liked that IconApps focuses on applications that simplify the lives of their users. While they’ve launched four different application with this focus, I was provided with download codes for the following:
  • KeyDates: Does just what it says—helps you remember important dates. $2.99
  • Family Vault: Tracks critical family facts like blood type, SSN, and passport number. $1.99

KeyDates:
Key dates is a great program if you are in charge of managing all the holidays, anniversary and birthday activities in your home.

How it works: Managing the information and adding dates is easy. Simply click on the plus sign on the top right side of the screen. From there you will be asked to select from three categories: Anniversary, Birthday or Holiday. After selecting your category you will be prompted to enter the person’s information – Name, Date, Notes, etc. One of
the best features – in my opinion – is the ability to set one of two reminders. A gift reminder, which allows you to set a reminder up to a month out from the event, or a call reminder which reminds you the day of the event to call them. This is uber helpful as I am a out of site out of mind kind of gal. Just this morning I received the three week email reminder for my son’s 7th birthday. Also, the notes section lets you keep track of things like how old the person is turning, what you got them last year, their husband’s name, etc.

While grouped by month when the application turns on, Key Dates also makes it easy to sort and find information with handy category buttons across the bottom of the screen.

Family Vault:
This application allows you to safely keep track of your family’s important information without having to worry about losing cards or other papers that are difficult to replace.

How it Works: Like KeyDates, Family Vault is a very straight forward application. After the initial set up you will be returned to the main screen. This screen is where you will begin to enter your family information, by individual. To enter info, simply press the + sign in the top right corner. From there you will be prompted to enter your family member’s name, birthday, SSN, blog type, license number and passport information. After entering you just hit save to return to the main screen and can then begin to add additional individuals.

If you are looking for straightforward iPhone applications that can help you stay organized and on top of things, I’d recommend checking out Family Vault & Key Dates. Both programs are safe (password protected) and are extremely easy to use. Additionally, if you like what you are reading, you might want to check out their web site for info. on their other two apps (which I have not tried) iPasswords and Giftster.

Thank you to IconApps for providing me with the applications to review. Digital images also provided by IconApps.

Gotta Get My Goetta!

If you are from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area you already know what Goetta is(pronounced GET-AA)
For the rest of the world, you’re still wondering why I’m even talking about it .
This past week-end Covington KY’ Mainstrasse Village, held its annual salute to all things Goetta.
Goetta on rye,Goetta chili,Goetta balls…well you see where this is going.
Goetta is believed to be a food stuff brought here by our German and Scottish ancestors.
It looks a lot like sausage patties and tastes a bit like heaven.

Here is a recipe(forgive me because I can’t remember who’s recipe this is) that does a great job instructing you on making the Pork version,(some folks add beef to the pork)

When its done, fry with a piece of bacon and enjoy!

*Don’t even try to make this with any other oats but pinhead (also known as steel cut) – the other oats will make it too mushy.

What you will need:
2-3 pounds pork shoulder

8 cups water

3-4 cups chopped onion

2 large bay leaves

2 ribs celery, chopped with leaves

1 tablespoon salt, or more to taste

1 tablespoon pepper, or more to taste

Poultry seasoning to taste

3 cups pinhead oats

Cut meat into big pieces and put in pot with water, onions, bay, celery, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and lower to simmer.

Cook, uncovered, and stirring occasionally, for 2 hours.

Meat should be real tender and fall off bone if that’s what you’re using.

Strain and chop meat finely.

Set meat and veggies aside.

Pour liquid back into pan and add pinhead oats.

Bring to a boil, then lower to a simmer.
Cook, uncovered, stirring often, for another 2 hours.

Mixture will be thick.

Add meat,veggies, and seasonings.

Simmer another 1 -2 hours.

Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary.

Line 3-4 loaf pans with aluminum foil and spray each one.

Pour goetta into pans, packing down firmly.

Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate.

*For a creamy, softer goetta, cover pans. Uncovered, you get a crisper crust.
Keeps for a couple weeks in frig, or several months in freezer.

To serve, slice goetta and fry with pieces of bacon.

Ok now I’m hungry!
Go get your Goetta on and Ill be over later with my plate!
Hugs and Happy Tummies!
