Our New Baby Has Four Legs

With the recent passing of my childhood dog, Bear I decided it was time to get the boys a puppy.

I am pleased to introduce Roxie Bluebell Boyer. Roxie is a 9wk old dachshund/ Pomeranian mix that we found on Craig’s List.

While she is absolutely adorable, I forgot how much work puppies are. It’s almost like having a new baby. Since bringing her home Thursday Ive been frantically researching potty training and behavior techniques. While I know I won’t happen over night (she is a puppy after all) I am excited to say that I am starting to see signs of hope (and fewer potty accidents) already. (Stay tuned for a future post with tips for potty training – I am learning a lot)

Here are a couple of pictures of our new baby. The boys are madly in love with her.

Oh she’s so cute! Buy a crate… it makes potty training so much easier! And you can put her toys and a soft bed in there and she will love it. Makes them feel cozy!

We use jingle bells on our door. For the first couple of weeks, you physically take the dog’s nose and make it hit ring the bells then take them right outside to go pee. After awhile, they’ll ring the bell themselves when they need to go our. Our new puppy took about a week to be totally trained this way (in addition to crate training). Our 11 year old dog will even ring the bells when she has to throw up!! Bonus!!

Mimi – Thanks for the reco. I have a crate we use at night but I didn’t even think of it as a potty training tool.

Momo – I love that you said this. My friend had told me the same thing so I bought some ribbon and bells this weekend. I am hoping it works with her. She’s pretty smart so I am optimistic!!

  4. OMG …. THAT is one adorable puppy. Enjoy the sweet little puffball. The tiny pup stage is over before you know it (kinda like kids, only faster!)
