Finding My “Sweet Tooth”

I recently discovered a hidden gem in Newport, KY – Sweet Tooth Candies on 11th all because of Twitter.

I’ll explain.

Yesterday around 1:30 p.m. the boys and I headed out for an afternoon of fun at the Newport Aquarium. Much to our dismay, upon arriving I realized that our passes had expired.  Not wanting to spend a ton of money, the boys and I began brainstorming what else we might do. Being the geek that I am, I of course Twittered about our situation.

With in a few minutes I received a (life changing) tweet from ADorkAndHisPork, suggesting we try out an ice cream shop over near 12th street. Not ones to turn down ice cream, nor an adventure, the boys and I packed up and headed over to check out Sweet Tooth Candies.

If you’ve never been there before, Sweet Tooth Candies is a handmade chocolate shop and home made ice cream parlor located on 11th Street in Newport, KY. It’s been around from more then 100 yrs (apparently I live under a rock!) and upon entering the building you feel like you are stepping back in time. The cozy shop has a traditional ice cream parlor feel and is host to cases (and cases) of handmade chocolates as well as large variety of handmade ice cream.

First let’s address the ice cream. During our visit we ordered a scoop of strawberry ice cream on a sugar cone for Sean, one of their famous ice balls (rainbow flavor) for Brady, and a mouthwatering banana split with strawberry and pineapple toppings for me.   I must say that I was really impressed with everything we ordered. The ice cream, made by Sweet Tooth Candies, was unbelievable. I’d never tasted anything so fresh and creamy. The strawberry ice cream contained chunks of real strawberry and the texture was so smooth.  They handled the toppings on the banana split in the same fashion – the strawberries were fresh and whole, as was the pineapple. No fake toppings here people! The vanilla ice cream was also probably the best I’d ever tasted.

Next, the chocolates. Now while we did not purchase any during our visit, I did have a chance to try a sample of their chocolate ganache (perhaps a truffle?). It.was.so.good.  I am no chocolate expert but this thing melted in my mouth.  It was so good in fact that when the woman serving us turned around to scoop our ice cream I snagged another sample!

If you have the chance I’d highly recommend checking out Sweet Tooth Candies the next time you are in or around Newport. Its something both you and your children will really enjoy. I know it’s where my family will be heading from now on for our ice cream fix!
