Since attending the Northern Kentucky Wine Festival last year I’ve become infatuated with local wineries. Before attending I’d had no idea that wine was made in Kentucky. It blew me away.
Knowing of my quest to discover great wines from my great state, a representative with Elk Creek Vineyards recently invited me to try it’s collection of scary Halloween wines. That’s right - Halloween wines. Something for us grown-ups to enjoy after the kids are finished trick-or-treating!
A little about the wines (From Elk Creek):
- Bone Dry Red ($19.99) is a rich, well-oaked Cabernet Sauvignon brimming with fancy ripe black currant, roasted coffee bean and bitter dark chocolate flavors; all are framed in suave tannins.
- Ghostly White Chardonnay ($14.99), barrel- fermented in French oak, reveals ripe apple fruit and hints of citrus.
- Ghostly White Sweet Mellow ($9.99) will satisfy taste buds which crave the fruity complexities of the Cayuga and Vidal Blanc grapes.
Being a white wine kind of gal, I went straight for the bottles of Ghostly White. While they were both good, I personally liked the Ghostly White Chardonnay a little better. The Sweet Mellow was well, a little sweet for me. Don’t get me wrong – it was good (I drank the entire bottle). I personally think the Sweet Mellow would be a great choice for someone who A) enjoys a sweeter/dessert wine or B) someone who is just starting to drink wine. It definitely ties well to Halloween as it would go well with just about any candy stolen from your child’s trick-or-treat bag.
For me, the Ghostly White Chardonnay was the best. I loved the way the wine tasted and enjoyed the scent it offered each time I drank from the glass. Not a regular drinker of red wine, I thought the Bone Dry Red was pretty good. The coffee and dark chocolate flavors were not something I’d experienced before and I found them enjoyable.
Every Halloween our neighborhood gets together after the kids trick-or-treat to grill out and this year I’ll def. be bringing a bottle of Ghostly White to enjoy (notice I didn’t say share…. sorry neighbors!).
Around Cincinnati/Dayton/Louisville you can find these fun Halloween wines at Elk Creek stores in Florence Mall, Rupp Arena, Fayette Mall, and Mall at St. Matthews as well at Kentucky Kroger Liquor stores, Party Town, Party Source, and Jungle Jim’s. Grilling out party for the adults after trick-or-treating? Brilliant!
