Earlier this week we celebrated my birthday at a local sushi restaurant. While the boys will go to just about any restaurant in town, normally they are hesitant to try new foods. Typically we end up going with generic foods like grilled chicken, chicken nuggets, veggies, etc.
Well on this particular evening, something happened. I am not sure what it was, but both boys decided that they were going to try some of the traditional items on the menu.
WHAT?? My children?
Yup, and they loved it all!! I was so proud of them. I can’t wait to see how it goes the next time we go out to eat. I am hoping this is a trend I’ll continue to see!
If any of you are dealing with, or have dealt with, this same issue, I ‘d love to know how you are encouraging your children to try new foods? The night of my birthday we used the opportunity to talk about the Japanese culture and related the items to what children in Japan eat. It seemed to work – they thought it was cool to be eating the same foods as children from another country.

Wish I could have a night like that!!
Happy Valentine’s Day, Shannan!

This is a major issue for me. Abby is really picky just like her father. I struggle with getting her to try things. I love trying new things and now you’ve got me craving sushi.

I don’t have a problem with them trying something new usually it is just having them finish it instead of asking for chicken after we have ordered something else

Lol. Cort. We’ve gone through that phase too. SM once swore he wanted sushi, we ordered him a roll, and then I had to eat it.
April my 4 yr old is super picky. I was shocked when he ate the salad with ginger dressing. He’s a loyal Ranch kind of guy.

My littlest guy is a “I’ll try anything once” kind of kid…loves Indian, Chinese..you name it! The spicier the better too! lol The oldest however…ugh
Trying to get him to try anything at ALL is difficult, if I tried to get him to eat sushi he’d keel over from fright! So weird! I’m going to borrow the “kids from another culture eat this” and see if that works..if you find other tricks let me know!

Our two year old is super picky – letting her order what she wants at a restaurant helps (as long as nobody else at the table has fries!)
Last week she ordered ribs and instantly said yucky when they arrived at the table
*sigh*
But just the other day she ordered pizza with a side of veggies and ate all the broccoli and yellow carrots. I was stunned.
That’s awesome.
My kids are crazy eaters.. sometimes, they’ll try anything and everything; other times… they live on apples and cheese and popcorn.
*sigh*
When going out it’s generally the same for us, except when it comes to Asian food. My 2 oldest are 1/4 Korean so I think maybe it’s in their blood… yeah, right. *wink* Actually, all of my kids like sushi (we only let them have veggie and cooked), edamame, miso soup, and my son loves to eat the shaved, pickled ginger.
My youngest daughter likes broccoli and cauliflower. They all like most vegetables too. I can get the younger two to at least try almost everything, but the oldest is the worst. It’s highly annoying for a parent that as a child LOVED all things vegetable and weird.
Wow, I am impressed! Maybe there is hope for my girls one day. My youngest rebels every time I put brocolli on her plate and if she sees a baby carrot it really throws her for a loop. I keep trying and trying and they keep resisting and resisting…….I’ve done the “it takes 10 tries to like somthing” – uh, still not happening. Hopefully I’ll be able to post pics like yours – might not happen until they’re 20+

This is so reassuring. Henry is in that phase where he only eats chicken nuggets, french fries, and bananas. I’m starting to feel like a giant mom FAILURE!
I keep trying new things . . . one of these days I know that he’ll surprise me!
