Dealing With An Allergic Reaction

It was a regular Thursday night.  I picked up the boys from my Mom’s house after work and headed home to get SM ready for Karate at 5:45pm.  As SM got ready, I made him and the B-Man a snack. I cut up a red pear and put the slices in a bowl with some green grapes. Sounds harmless and tasty, right?

SM eats his snack and we leave for Karate. The B-Man stays back with Grandma.

One hour later when I return, B-Man is quietly holding his mouth. He isn’t saying anything as he is watching cartoons.   I notice he’s holding his mouth and ask him about it.  He pulls his hand down and starts to freak out a little.   The left side of his mouth is completely inflamed.

I snapped a pic to send my Mom so she could see the allergic reaction

I immediately check his mouth – looking to see if the swelling is also in his throat or affecting his tongue. Thankfully it’s not.  I call the pediatrician’s office. It’s after-hours so I speak with a woman who’s responsible for passing the message on to the Dr-on-call.  I tell her what’s wrong and give her my number. Repeating it to make sure she has it correctly.

Never having dealt with what appeared to be an allergic reaction, I turned to Facebook for advice.  My friends unanimously recommend I give him Benadryl.  I call my Mom. She says the same.

Of course I didn’t have any at home so I grabbed the B-Man and we headed up to Walgreens.  I give it to him right there in the store.

I continued to watch him like a hawk throughout the night. The Dr’s office never called me back.

We still aren’t 100% sure what caused the allergic reaction.  The grapes were nothing new.  The red pear was however was, but pears are so mild, it’s hard to know.

At this point we aren’t 100% sure what happened (or how we got so lucky that it didn’t spread to his tongue and throat) but you can can bet we’ll be visiting an allergist soon as well as investigating why the Dr’s office never called back.
