Sure BlogHer is about blogging and catching up with old friends but it’s also a chance to have a little fun. This year I set out on a mission… to meet and have my photo taken with all of the ‘BIG’ celebrities in attendance. You may have heard that several attended, but the ones I’m talking about didn’t quite get as much hype…..

Cincinnati Social Media Challenge

You may remember from previous posts that I am the group manager for the Cincinnati group on BlogHer.

Well the conference may be over, but there are still many things going on over at BlogHer.com. Among them is BlogHer’s 2009 Social Media Challenge, of which I am happy to say that I am participating in.

This year BlogHer has teamed up with the non-profit Donors Choose and is using it’s power to help raise funds for public schools.

DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that enables you to donate to schools and students need. The way it works is that teachers post requests for items like books, tables, school supplies, etc. to the site – along with estimated costs and the deadline for which they’d like to use the item in the classroom. You then can choose to donate towards their effort, be it $5 or $100. Once enough funds are raised, the teachers get their items. Donors later receive photos showing how the item(s) was used in the classroom.

This year I was asked to lead the fundraising effort for the Cincinnati blogging community and I couldn’t be more excited.

Eight projects have currently been submitted by local teachers to the site, with the total amount of funding requested falling just under $4,000 (averaging around $340 each). While I’d love to raise enough money to support them all, I thought I’d start small with one project. Then if we reach our goal we can add another!

For this first challenge, the goal is to raise $436 towards the purchase of a Child Friendly Computer Station for 2. Being that we are all using computers every day, I thought it only appropriate that we try and help these inner city pre-school students with special needs with their request for help for a computer station and chairs.

As I mentioned there are several projects available for supporting in our city. You can view each project, a little about the school and the need by clicking on the widget in my left sidebar. I am hoping together we can help raise enough money to help at least 2 of these project requests be fulfilled.

How you can help:

1) Make a donation. Big or small, every dollar will help a local school and even more important, help a local child.

2) Get involved. Participate in the Bloggers Give Challenge. Add the Cincinnati BlogHer Team widget to your blog. Guys can do this too! You don’t have to be female, just because it’s BlogHer!

3) Spread the Word. Tell your friends about this challenge. Share it with your readers. Let’s help as many of these local schools with their project wishes as we can!

4) Follow @donorschoose on Twitter or become a Fan on Facebook.

Last year, bloggers across the country raised $270,000 to provide 65,000 students with the resources needed to learn. That’s pretty amazing!

As many of you know I am on my way to BlogHer in Chicago.

This year, rather than fly several of us -Amy in Ohio, UDandi, Playgroups are no Place for Children, Art Slam – decided to turn it into a road trip and drive up for the conference.

Well what would be a road trip without mix tape? Luckily Andi from UDandi made one for us, and it rocked.

Why BlogHer Was So Special

I’ve been thinking for a while about this post. How would I recap my first experience at BlogHer? How would I convey the way I felt about the conference, about the experience, about meeting so many wonderful women?

In the end I thought pictures would say it best.

Amy (AmyinOhio), Myself, Susan (Working Moms Against Guilt), Meghan (AMomTwoBoys) and Kristen (Kribaby) at the Kirtsy/AllTop party at Guy Kawasaki’s gorgeous house (This is one man who knows how to throw a party!).

At the People’s Party Meghan and Amy introduced me to one of my new favorite bloggers – Kendra (Headless Mom). If you had a chance to hang out with Kendra during BlogHer, you know how awesome she is.

At the People’s Party I also had a chance to run in to two of my favorite moms as well as make a new friend. Here I am with BusyMom, Jenn (MommyNeedsCoffee) and Glennia (The Silent I and the Momocrats). Please, Please, Please check out the header of the Momocrats blog. You’ll. Pee. Your. Pants.

The next morning I ran in to Andrew. He was there promoting his photo sharing site, Photrade.com. Andrew is one of my favorite new media man types and reigns from the Cincinnati area just like yours truly.

Ahhh…. Shannon (PhatMommy), my name twin. I ran into her during the speed dating session Friday morning. She rocks. It’s that simple.

Here I am Saturday night having a drink with my girl MerlotMom in the furniture department at Macy’s. We had a blast hunting down wine and champagne together. Girls gotta drink, you know.

Auh, Pauline (OHMommy) from Classy Chaos. If you read her blog you know how funny and awesome she is. In person, she’s ten times as much.

In one of the sessions I ran into my girls Kara and Abbey from MomCentral. We’ve been talking for over a year but have never had the chance to meet in person. I can’t wait to see them both again when BlogHer heads to Boston later this year.

And let us not forget Rocco. While he is not a blogger, I had a chance to meet him during the conference, courtesy of BlogHer and Bertolli pasta. MMMM.

Finally, I cannot forget all of the other awesome women I had the chance to meet in person, sans photo. I cannot wait to see all of you again next year.

I need to Bitch…..For the First Time

If you read this blog regularly you know that I rarely complain. This blog is primarily a very happy space where I talk about the great adventures of the Boyer family.

Well today I am irritated and I need to vent. It’s about the Sesame Street room at BlogHer.

Let me break it down….Here at the event you can sign up to tape a video with either Grover or Abby Cadabby from Sesame Street. Really cool right???

Well I went up yesterday and signed up for a video with Grover as I have two boys. Right before my turn, Grover goes on break and Abby comes on board. Now I have no problem with Abby, it’s just that I have boys. Boys who would not relate to a fairy monster the way they would to Grover.

I explain to the girl handling the scheduling that I would like to do my video with Grover and ask if I can comeback when Grover returns. She informs me that he won’t be back until tomorrow and schedules me for 11:30 a.m. today.

So, this morning I head down to the room and check in to make sure I am good to go. I notice that Abby Cadabby is doing the interviews and ask the girl when Grover will be up. She informs me that he’d done the earlier shift and that he wouldn’t be back until afternoon. I ask if I can swap out and come back then and she informs me that it’s booked. The best she can offer is a photo opp with him.

WTF!!@#@! I told her I wanted to be with Grover. I spoke with her about it yesterday. I am just super bummed as I already told my son that I was meeting Grover and he was super excited. Now I have to tell him I couldn’t make it happen.

Sorry to bitch and moan. I try to avoid it but I am just so disappointed by the whole situation.

PS. I love Sesame Street and think it is totally cool that they made this opportunity available. I’m just disappointed that it didn’t work out for me.

A Tasty Treat at BlogHer

Rocco DiSpirito goes from table to table talking with attendees at lunch.

Rocco did a little mini cooking demo for us over lunch. During the demo he gave great tips for simplifyg life in the kitchen. Something I need!

Finally. Me and Rocco. He was a very nice guy and I really loved the opportunity to meet him and chat with him about cooking.

BlogHer Bound

In less than 7 hours I’ll be loading up the car and heading to the airport bound for BlogHer in San Francisco. I not been to a conference of this magnitude before and I just can’t wait for it to be here. I’m particularly excited as I’m flying out with two local friends I made through blogging -AmyInOhio and Susan from Working Moms Against Guilt.

I’m looking forward to get to know each of them better and to meeting my other online friends in person. The only thing that could make the BlogHer adventure better would be if my good friend Laura was able to go.

I’m taking both my regular camera and my Flip, and I’ll be sharing snapshots from the conference here on Mommy Bits.
