Getting Away

This weekend we packed up the car and headed down to Burnside, KY for a little relaxing on Lake Cumberland. Like many weekends before it, we had an amazing time boating and swimming, just having some good quality family time.

Here are some pics I snapped over the course of the weekend. I’ll be writing more about our trip soon over on Family Friendly Cincinnati, if any of you are considering a trip down. We’ve been coming down for 5 years and I can’t say enough great things about it.

It Just Sucks

This weekend we head down to Somerset, KY to spend our last weekend boating on Lake Cumberland before school starts, and it sucks! It sucks not because I don’t love school and want my children to have great educations, but because it means that summer is coming to an end. It means that before you know it the water will start to turn cool and the leaves will change. This all leads to putting the boat up until next year. It’s just a bummer.

Boating and being down and Lake Cumberland is a big thing for our family. If you read my blog regularly, you are probably sick of my boating posts, but I’ll tell you, it’s how we get away from it all. It’s how we focus on just being together – no distractions, no computers, no phones, no soccer practice. Just the four of us hanging out, having fun, boating, playing board games, roasting marsh mellows and making memories that we’ll have for a life time.

So this is why it sucks that school is starting.

Family Vacation Time at Lost Lodge

Last weekend our family headed down to the Somerset/Burnside Kentucky area for our first weekend boating trip of the summer on Lake Cumberland. A tradition for the past three-four years, it’s a time of the year that I cherish. Thinking that many of you may be within driving distance of the area, I thought I would share information about it here at Mommy Bits.

If you’ve never heard of it, Lake Cumberland is one of the largest man-made bodies of water east of the Mississippi – it’s more than over 63,000 acres. The lake is a boaters paradise with water that averages about 90 feet in depth!

While there are MANY small towns and cities located along Lake Cumberland, for our family, there is no better location than the Somerset/Burnside area. It’s a good-sized little town with plenty of local amenities and wonderful hospitality. Living in a major city, I am drawn to the areas laid back style and way of life. Lake Cumberland is perfect for your family vacation!

With regards to where to stay, there are lots of housing options in the area – from camping at General Burnside Island State Park, renting a private town-home, staying in cabins (like we do) or you can even rent a whole house from the owner.

For the past year or so we’ve stayed at Lost Lodge, a cute cabin community located on the edge of Somerset in Burnside.

Lost Lodge is located in a quaint wooded area and has 1,2 & 3 bedroom cabins. The prices are really reasonable and the include full kitchens so you can cook (and save $$) while you are there. Lost Lodge is also family friendly and has a playground located in the center. If you are a boater like us, you’ll LOVE the fact that Lost Lodge also has a boat dock! This is important if you have your own boat as it is NOT fun putting a boat in and out of the water every day. The other thinking I love about Lost Lodge are the owners Mike and Dona. They’ve owned Lost Lodge for about 8 years and go out of their way to make you feel at home. They are also just all around cool people (Check out Dona’s car – it’s seriously awesome).

If you are thinking about heading down to Lake Cumberland I’d highly recommend it. It’s a great time for families (and couples/singles) that you’ll remember for years to come.

PS. If you don’t have a boat, Lost Lodge is just down the road from Burnside Marina - where you can rent one. Also, our favorite store – Boat-n-stuff (Don’t you love the name!) - rents & sells ski’s, innertubes & more! One more thing… This is Pulaski County. It’s Dry. You have to bring your adult beverages with you or you are out of luck.

‘Meme’ories (a little about me)

Over on Facebook my friend Kate tagged me with the “25 Things About Me” Meme. Never one to turn down a challenge, here are 25 things about me that you might not have known. Hopefully you’ll find them interesting!

Here are the rules: Once you’ve been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 5 people to be tagged (It was 25 but that’s a lot!). If I tagged you, it’s because I want to know more about you.

1. I was born in West Germany. We moved to the states when I was 3 years old.

2. I ran long-distance in middle and high school. I held the record for the mile for 13+ years.

3. I grew up in a small town in Iowa – Denison – best known for being the birthplace of Donna Reed.

4. I started dating my husband while I was still in high school.

5. I am so freaked out by latex balloons that I won’t let me children near them.

6. I bartended for 6 years at a local neighborhood bar. It’s still my favorite place to hang out.

7. I gained more than 50 lbs with my first pregnancy. I weighed just 10 lbs less than my husband.

8. I won’t stand or walk across a sidewalk grate for fear of falling through.

14. I can’t fall asleep at night (at home) without checking to make sure the doors are locked and giving each of my boys a kiss on the forehead.

15. I like peanut butter and pickle sandwiches.

16. I have a tattoo of a gecko lizard on my right hip. I got it when I was 22.

17. My favorite actress is Parker Posey. If I’d had a little girl I would have named her Parker.

18. We own a boat that we keep down at Lake Cumberland. I would be on it every day if I could.

19. I met my husband working at Frisch’s Big Boy. He was 17, I was 16.

20. My life was not complete until my boys came along.

21. I am a very loyal friend.

22. I cannot cook – both because I don’t enjoy it and because I suck at it.

23. In college I majored in Speech Communication and minored in political science with an emphasis in Japanese studies.

24. I’ve lived in Germany, Iowa, Texas, New Mexico, Illinois and Kentucky.

25. I received my hunting license in 8^th grade after successfully completing a hunter safety course in gym. (Disclaimer: I’ve never been hunting)

A Little R & R For the Family

On Thursday evening the boys and I headed down to Lake Cumberland to meet up with their Dad. He’s been down here since last Sunday and now we’re joining him for a little R&R (through Sunday).

I don’t know what it is about the small community of Burnside, where we stay, or Lake Cumberland itself, but something about this place just really makes me feel relaxed and at ease. I think it takes me back to my childhood and the small farm town in Iowa where I grew up. Located in the middle of no where, we spent almost all of our time outdoors- playing at the park, fishing, canoeing, going to fish frys, etc.

Doesn’t it just look peaceful and relaxing???
